One Month After the Election

Writer's picture: Zenique Gardner PerryZenique Gardner Perry

When waking up to the results on that Wednesday morning, and for days thereafter, the uncertainty of what could happen to our work felt immense, among other concerns: the safety of immigrants, the health of our gender non-conforming friends and family, the upending of all strides toward equity and justice since the fight for Civil Rights.

It has felt like a great challenge to reject fear and reach for joy, hope.

With this, it has been necessary for us here at Undo Bias to recalibrate post-Election, reminding ourselves of what we have been building, especially this year with our Arts & Liberation programming, which has brought about new partnerships with Mid-America Arts Alliance, St. Louis Art Museum, and Bread & Roses. These partnerships have allowed us to broaden our efforts, merging our respective creative practices with our antiracism work.

But this moment is also forcing us to dream up new ways to engage our followers and collaborators with public programming, with offerings both virtual and in-person. We know that, unlike the 1960’s and 1970’s, the revolution will be televised. It will be organized and persistent. But it will also be threatened, thwarted and antagonized. We have been emphasizing how much we need each other; how, more than ever, important this work— our work— is.

As such, Undo Bias intends to act as a guiding light, acknowledging that there are many of us that do this work. We like to think of ourselves as one of many lighthouses to which you can navigate when facing the rough, uncharted waters that await us in the months and years to come.

Our ask of you: stay connected. If you don’t already, please follow us on social media via Instagram and Facebook. When you feel stuck, defeated, or afraid, reach out to us. We are accessible via email and/or direct messages on Instagram. And stay tuned as we will soon be posting a list of Undo Bias public programs and events for which we hope you will make plans to join us along the journey.

Our collective liberation is tethered to all of us. And together, we won’t be broken.
